Tips for proper piano moving

It is difficult to find the same large, heavy (we often can not even imagine what the piano’s weight is) and at the same time a very fragile and tender thing, like this musical instrument. Thus, piano moving can be complicated task. And it’s not about dimensions, although they also play an important role in transportation.  It’s about its fragility.  It can not be shaken and should be protected from bumps.  However, if you have a piano in your house, then you simply should know how to transport it correctly, if such a necessity arises. It requires careful handling in everything: when setting up, using, storing and especially when transporting.  How to properly transport a piano, what precautions should be taken?

The instrument can not be disassembled, no matter how much weight you have to move the piano.  It is necessary to exclude even the slightest tremors – all this can lead to damage to the mechanisms and loss of sound.  The difficulty also lies in the fact that the piano may not fit in the cargo elevator: manual transportation using rigging belts is required.  In this case, the question is no longer: how to transport the piano yourself.  It will take the help of experienced movers.  The narrower stairways and corridors, the higher the floor – the more attentive and experienced specialists should be.

 Tips for preparing for transportation

Many people believe that transporting a piano independently is about the same as moving a wardrobe.  However, it is not correct to use such an approach to this capricious instrument. There are certain rules for the carriage of pianos, which must be followed.  First of all, remove all covers, and panels.  This allows you to secure these parts, reduce the total weight of the instrument and, accordingly, make its moving easier. The impactor can be removed, but not advisable, as there is a huge risk of damage during transportation. If you are sure it is completely intact, then just remove the retaining bolts to take out the impactor.

Sometimes, the flooring gets damages as a result of piano moving. It is very important to transport the instrument without damaging the flooring. Do not try to move it on metal rollers located at the ends of the legs: they do not have any practical use, but come out as a decorative element. It is necessary to move the instrument in such a way as to exclude vibration, dirt, dust and moisture to the internal device, so wrap the piano with packing material before transportation. Depending on how heavy the piano is, different devices can be used: special carts, belts, sledges, rails and other technologies.  You shouldn’t put the piano at an angle on the steps.  Experienced movers know how to lower the piano on the stairs without unpleasant consequences.  Leave your request and receive many offers from professional carriers. Well, if you live on the first floor, then the problems with the lowering a bulky instrument will not arise. If you are moving from the top floor and there is no freight elevator or it doesn’t work due to a malfunction, make sure that the piano isn’t in an inclined position .

All piano models are sensitive to moisture, frost, heat.  It is better to transport the instrument in the warm season. Make sure that the quality of packaging of the piano is good enough and do not let it stay in the street for long in cold weather. When loading in a truck, it is first necessary to lay the impactor and the panels. Afterwards, attach the rear wall to the side of impactor.  After that – slightly raise the piano and push it into the body of the truck.  Transport the instrument only in a horizontal position, at a not high speed and use fasteners to fully fix it. Remember that the slower and more cautiously you drive, the more likely it is to bring the instrument in its original form to its destination.

 Packing Tips

How to transport a piano to minimize the likelihood of damage to the instrument? Pay special attention to the packaging of the instrument: wrap paper or cardboard with all the projecting parts – legs, wheels, corners and pedals.  Secure the packing material with adhesive tape and wrap the entire surface with a plastic wrap with small holes (so that the hands of the movers do not slide over the surface of the film). The strings should be covered with thick paper. Put a thin layer of foam rubber or other soft material between the keys and the cover. The piano lid can be secured with an adhesive tape.

What to do after transportation?

Place the piano in the room carefully and slowly.  If possible, open a window in the room to avoid sudden temperature changes.  Piano should gradually get used to the microclimate of the room – it is necessary to close the keyboard and cover for a while.  Do not wipe the possible moisture on the surface of the object, leave it to dry completely. It is also not recommended to play the piano on the day of transportation.  And finally, the sound settings can be set up not earlier than in a week after transportation.
